*Recently, the news media in the Houston, Texas, area has been reporting an increase in the number of reports of our local residents, especially senior citizens, being victimized by people who are first calling them collect, and then after their collect calls are accepted telling the victim that they have reached their number by mistake, and then persuading the victim ...by telling them various false stories about how very important their call is and why they cannot just hang up and try again and about how much they need the victim's help...to dial another number with *72 in front of it, which causes all calls that are then made from that number to be billed to the victim's account.
Note: It is recommended that people who believe themselves to be a victim of the "*72 scam" dial *73 to at least stop the damage.
Note: Since these incidents have thus far included at least AT&T, Comcast, and Verizon account holders, it seems reasonable to assume that the account holders of our other telephone service providers are also at risk.
