*Senior Citizens can make their homes safer by following a few reasonable suggestions, including those that I have listed here.
1. Emergency telephone numbers (family, friends, etc.) should be posted at/near land line telephones and should be written in large and easily read lettering.
2. Any electrical cords that are showing wear and tear should be replaced.
3. An adequate number of electrical outlets should be installed in order to avoid overloading electrical circuits.
4. Avoid using multiple extension cords, and especially avoid using multiple extension cord extenders.
5. Avoid stretching extension cords across open areas and/or doorways.
6. Use non-skid wax on non-carpeted floors.
7. Use only throw rugs with non-skid backing.
8. Be sure that interior doors can be unlocked from both sides, which is especially important in the bath and bedrooms.
9. Be sure to install and maintain smoke detectors, as appropriate.
