*In my ongoing efforts to better understand "Weather" and "Global Warming," and how they relate to each other, I have encountered a number of additional terms that require a better understanding, including those that I have listed below.
1. Greenhouse Effect...is atmospheric heating caused by solar radiation being readily transmitted inward through the earth's atmosphere while long wave radiation is being less readily transmitted outward, due to absorption by certain certain gases in the atmosphere.

2. Greenhouse Gases...are gases that absorb terrestrial radiation and contribute to the greenhouse effect.
Note: The main greenhouse gasses are water vapor, methane, carbon dioxide, and ozone, of which ozone seems to be attracting the most publicity, which is why I have included the following definitions.

A. Ozone is a form of oxygen (O3) that is a powerful oxidizing agent that is considered a pollutant in the lower troposphere but an essential chemical in the stratosphere where it protects the earth from high-energy ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
B. Ozone Action Day...is a "heads-up" message that is issued by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) through the National Weather Service (NWS) when ozone levels may reach dangerous levels the next day.
Note: These messages are to encourage residents to prevent air pollution by postponing the use of lawn mowers, motor vehicles, boats, as well as filling their vehicles gas tanks.

C. Ozone Advisory...is issued by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) through the National Weather Service when ozone levels reach 100.
Note: Ozone levels above 100 are unhealthy for people with heat and/or respiratory ailments.

D. Ozone Hole...is a severe depletion of stratospheric ozone over Antarctica that occurs each spring.
Note: The possibility exists that a hole could form over the Arctic as well.
Note: This depletion is caused by a chemical reaction involving ozone and chlorine, primarily from human produced sources, cloud particles, and low temperatures.

5. Ozone Layer...is an atmospheric layer that contains a high proportion of oxygen that exists as ozone, and acts as a filtering mechanism against incoming ultraviolet radiation.
Note: This Ozone Layer is located between the troposphere and the stratosphere, around 9.5 to 12.5 miles (15 to 20 kilometers) above the earth's surface.
