TEXAS-AGRICULTURE-FACTS!

*According to the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA), Texas is still the second most productive state in the union as far a generating income from agriculture is concerned, despite the fact the The Lone Star State is becoming more and more urbanized as time goes on.
*In support of its contention that agriculture is also this state's second more profitable industry , the TDA has provided the following facts.
1. Eighty percent of the land in Texas is being used for some kind of agricultural production.
2. Ninety two percent of Texas' agricultural operations are still run by individuals or families.
3. Twenty nine percent of agricultural producers in Texas were women as of 2002, which was an increase of seven percent since 1997.
4. Although agriculture employs one out of every seven working Texans, less than two percent of the population is involved in day-to-day farming or ranching.
5. Texas farmers grow more than sixty different kind of commercial fruit and vegetable crops.
6. Texas ranks first in the nation in the number of cattle and calves being produced, which accounts for fifteen percent of the U.S. total.
7. Texas is the nation's top producer of cotton, sheep, wool, goats, and mohair.
8. Texas is a top producer of vegetables, citrus, corn, wheat, peanuts, pecans, grain sorghum, hay and rice.
9. Besides livestock and crops, the state's agriculture industry includes timber/forestry, aquaculture, bees/honey and nursery/greenhouse products.
10. Texas is the nation's third largest exporter of agricultural commodities, with the top ones being live animals and red meat, cotton and cottonseeds, hides and skins, wheat and wheat products, and feeds and fodder.
11. Texas' one million horses, representing approximately fifteen percent of all horses in the United States.
12. Texas leads the nation in the number of registered American Quarter Horses, American Paint Horses, Appaloosa horses and American Miniature Horses.
