*A number of years ago, circumstances conspired to give me the opportunity to bring my family from our home in California to The Piney Woods of East Texas for a short vacation, during which I enjoyed showing them some of the beautiful scenery that the region has to offer, and introducing them to a some of the friendly people who I have been fortunate enough to meet over the years, which they enjoyed just as much as...and maybe even more than...I had hoped that they would...but only in a general way...until we arrived in the historic little East Texas town of Jefferson on Thanksgiving day, and in search of a place where we could get a traditional Thanksgiving dinner of the kind that I had been missing ever since I had left the area as a much younger man and then gone off to see the world, and I am happy to say that even though we were late arrivals, and without reservations, the friendly staff at the Excelsior Hotel found us a table in their dining room and then fed us what I still remember as being one of the best traditional Thanksgiving dinners that I have ever had, which was made even better by the fact my family also enjoyed it about as much as I did, and then declared it to be a perfect ending to our perfect tour of what for me is still one of the most beautiful places on earth.
