*After reading some recent reporting by our local news media about a homeowner who used a shotgun to blow away a couple of would be burglars, a couple of my older visitors have decided to at least consider acquiring their first ever handguns for self defense and have asked for my thoughts on the matter, which are that while I do think that this is a decision that they should make for themselves I also think that they should incorporate the 7 P's into their planning process, because of the great wisdom that the 7 P's teach us, which is that Proper Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance, which means that before either of my two acquaintances actually acquires a handgun they should first clearly define the job that they want it to do, and then they should select a handgun that is best suited for actually doing that job, and then they should learn to how to use handguns in general...and the applicable laws about doing so...from competent instructors, who can advise them, as appropriate...and then they should learn how to use the particular handgun that they have selected, at least well enough to decide whether or not it is in fact their best choice for doing the job that they want to do, and then if they decide that that is in fact the way that they want to go they should shop around for the best dealer, and then for the best price, and then and only then should they actually make this purchase.
*After sharing my basic thoughts on this subject with my two acquaintances, one of whom lives in Louisiana and the other in Massachusetts, I also pointed out that since the laws about possessing and using handguns in the United States vary so much from jurisdiction to jurisdiction they should probably check with their local authorities before proceeding further.
