EDUCATION-TEXAS SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY!

*Sadly, according to an article that I found in February 23, 2008 online edition of the Houston Chronicle, the new president of Texas Southern University, John Rudley, is suggesting that the school's long-standing policy of accepting all applicants for admission, no matter what their academic backgrounds might be, should be discontinued, because of the fact that this policy contributes so greatly to the school’s exceptionally low graduation rate.
*President John Rudley, who has only been in office for a brief period, is said to believe that this change in the school’s admission policy is going to be necessary to revive the state's largest historically black university, which has been on a downward spiral for the last few years, which have been filled with various administrative scandals, and accreditation losses, and other “incidents” that have brought it a lot of bad press and an enrollment that has continued to shrink as solutions to its many problems have continued to elude those who have been in charge of trying to navigate it through these troubled and troubling times.
*Again, according to this article, the idea of dropping the school’s open admission policy is likely to trigger some very heated opposition, especially from those who have benefited from this academic second chance, which has enabled a large number of people, who would have not otherwise had the chance to attend college, with the opportunity to get a degree and to then use that degree to go on to decent jobs and a better life than they would have otherwise had.

Note: Since this is an issue that will be heatedly debated in the upcoming months, I will be adding further posts as time goes on. In the meantime, further input is invited.
